| Diversity in Bhutan 🌈 When I first came out as bisexual, it was only to my friends whom I knew would be supportive. I mustered up the courage to come out to my parents who didn’t react the best way & were in denial much to my sadness—now, they’re slowly starting to accept me, fortunately. I feel lucky because I was able to come out without dire consequences, I’ve only become more confident since. But I am aware of the people around me who are still so repressed, so afraid, surrounded by unsupportive people. To my friends whom I love, I’ve always expressed this hurt, this frustration, & I wanted to do something with these feelings, something worthwhile. So I started a fb page, ‘LGBTQ Society Bhutan,’ [@lgbtqsocietybhutan on ig] as a platform to share the stories of so many beautiful members of the Bhutanese LGBTQ community. Since then, I’ve found that so many people are open-minded & loving of our community that is growing day by day, with people building up the courage to accept who they are. I aim to share more educational posts regarding the diverse identities of gender & sexuality, I aim to share more stories of our local queer Bhutanese folks, & hopefully, create a wider network of allies, & a more safe & accepting environment for the LGBTQ community in Bhutan. I want it to be universally accepted that we deserve equal rights. We deserve visibility & acceptance.
