Kathmandu Animal Save’s effort to help financially affected people during these difficult times
COVID-19 has created an economic crisis and people under the poverty line who work each day for their daily bread have suffered the most. Recognizing this, Kathmandu Animal Save (KAS), an animal rights organization, has started vegan food giveaway for people residing around Boudha Stupa. The people who are focused on are those who rely on begging or people whose source of income is only enough to sustain their livelihood, even during normal times. The purpose of the food giveaway was to support the families who are struggling economically and also to support vegan businesses that have been affected by the pandemic. The food giveaway program started on the 26th of Ashoj and continued till the 15th of Kartik. The organization also organized a raw material distribution program on the 29th of Ashoj.
Over a span of 20 days, KAS continuously distributed cooked food for 30+ people. The raw materials distribution package consisted of 5 kg of rice, 1 litre of oil, 1 packet of salt, 1.5 kgs of beaten rice, 1 kg of chickpeas and green peas, 1 kg of red lentils, and 2 kgs of flour. These packages were distributed to 35+ people. KAS also provided homemade sel roti during the celebration of Dashain. The food was prepared by vegan restaurants.
KAS is a chapter under the Animal Save Movement that is working worldwide on the issues of climate, health, and animal rights in relation to animal agriculture in more than 70 countries. KAS is determined to unveil different forms of seen, unseen, and often neglected stories of animal cruelties and injustice, of animals, considered as food, into the light, and redefine the relationship between human and non-human animals. KAS holds its stand that all injustice and oppression are interconnected whether it is the mistreatment of domesticated animals or the commodity status of non-human animals.
