Working hand in hand with Local Government

Nepal has been under lockdown for more than 2 months and the ‘Ason Area’ which is the heart of Kathmandu under several restrictions has been densely populated.  Across Kathmandu many youths have been working independently or getting involved with different groups for relief during this situation..

This is a story from my area which is ward no. 27 of Kathmandu Municipality where the local government is putting in an effort to engage in initiatives of  youths & volunteers from Mitra Yuwa Club & Ason Bahal Tole Sudhar Samiti to reduce the negative impact of the ongoing crisis.

I got an opportunity to speak with some of the youths and members who are engaged since the week of lockdown to share about the experience and effort in the current situation.

One of the volunteers Mr. Bijendra Shrestha said, “Due to the current crisis our regular work and job is at a stand still and we are affected badly. But more than us, there are many families who are mostly of the migrated population who used to be involved in daily wages works. As all the business in this area has stopped, we have been supporting them by providing food on a day to day basis. My skill is more on the cooking front and this has been useful as we have to deliver food to hundreds of people in each shift. ”

A group of volunteers Sushant, Suman, and Nabin Bajracharya, who were found spraying medicine across streets commented that, “We are definitely worried about our health but we think that doing this work not only helps raise awareness and reduce the impact of the pandemic in the community but also helps us to get engaged and reduce the stress.  “

Rabin Shrestha said,“We are also encouraged to do these things mostly because individual businesses and groups such as Marwadi sewa samiti are donating goods even during the current crisis that has affected them badly. Taking a few steps to help permanent and temporary residents in our area is the least we could do from our side”

Through this article I want to share this work and say I would never leave the following individuals who are working in my area:

Sujan Shrestha, Prabin Shrestha, Amin Ratna Tuladhar, Soyal Joshi, Sakar Shrestha, Bal Joshi and others from mitra club, Tole Sudhar and Ward officials from my area. Thank you for keeping us safe.
